What They Are, How to Read Them and What to Do With Them by Ed Bagley

The ratings are updated following each week’s games and published in USA Today on Wednesdays.

1) Washington, one of the poor to mediocre teams in the country the last several years, was rated No. 38 following its upset of mighty Michigan 34-32 on Michigan’s home field. 31 after hammering Syracuse 42-14 in its home opener.

Folks in the gaming business know that more than a billion dollars is wagered on every Monday Night Football game during the season.

The BCS (Bowl Championship Series) does not factor in scoring margin. 143 after its opening loss) and Buffalo (ranked No. Both teams are among the 7 worst Division I-A teams in the country, joining Louisiana-Monroe, Rice, Duke, Utah State and Florida International.

Anyway, the Sagarin rating is a numerical measure of a team’s strength.

Created by Jeff Sagarin, a 1970 MIT mathematics graduate, these computer ratings are for Division I-A (what the NCAA now calls the Football Bowl (FB) Subdivision) and Division I-AA (what the NCAA now calls the Football Championship (FC) Subdivision) teams.

The first job for La Salle this year will be to score a touchdown, or any points, including a field goal or touchback. 174 (56 AA teams are rated better), and their play reflects their rating. 2. La Salle is a Catholic university located in Philadelphia.

La Salle lost its home opener to Ursinus 28-0. Following the first week of college football action, here are some facts that interested me about Sagarin’s first-week ratings:

7) A total of 242 teams, 119 A schools and 123 AA schools, make up the Sagarin College Football Ratings. Instead, it rewards teams that do well against good opponents.

When you know that more than $700 million can be bet on one game–the Super Bowl–in only Las Vegas, then you understand that billions were bet illegally on the Super Bowl last year in the United States and in offshore sports books around the world.

While betting on sports is only legal in a few places in the United States, such as Las Vegas, millions of office workers are involved in sports pools every week now that the football season has arrived.

The Sagarin College Football Ratings: What They Are, How to Read Them and What to Do With Them

 by: Ed Bagley

4) Wyoming, a small school and never among the nation’s top teams, was ranked No. The win was the biggest upset in college football history as no AA team had ever beaten a ranked team.

Copyright © 2007 Ed Bagley

Only Division I (both A and AA) are counted for rating and schedule strength during the season.

USA Today, the largest circulation newspaper in the United States, is the nation’s daily newspaper and carries the Sagarin College Football Ratings. 40 by Sagarin.

A hypothetical victory margin is determined by comparing the rating of the two teams after adding 2.93 points to the home team. Ursinus is not a planet but a real liberal arts college in Pennsylvania.

For those who wager, it may be helpful to put some science on your side when you wager, and one of the best places to do that is with the Sagarin College Football Ratings.

3) Appalachian State, a AA school, was rated No. The Irish failed to score a touchdown for the first time ever in their home opener.

If there is a way for the NCAA to assert its superior power, it does so by making everything more difficult and confusing, similar to your United States government and its IRS tax code which could reduce a sane person to tears just reading it.

6) Temple (ranked No. 242 La Salle Explorers. The home edge will vary during the season.

5) Notre Dame, beaten badly (33-3) by Georgia Tech, was rated No. Now you can better understand why La Salle College is ranked last among 242 Division I schools. . Following its horrendous loss, Michigan ended up being ranked No. 145 after its opening loss) face off in week two. Georgia Tech was rated No. The worst-rated AA school is the No. For Sagarin ratings and more detailed information go to: www.usatoday.com

You will have to forgive the NCAA for taking titles that have been used for years and are perfectly clear, then renaming them and creating confusion in the process.

Michigan was ranked No. 36 after steamrolling over UAB 55-18 in its home opener.

Ursinus College is not a Division 1 school (which includes the 242 teams with La Salle), not a Division II team (which includes another 157 teams), but a Division III team. The worst-rated A school is Florida International at No. 41 by Sagarin following its 23-3 home victory over Virginia.

2) Michigan State, another short end of the stick team for far too long, was rated No. The Explorers next job will be to actually win a game. 5 by both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll going into the game. 57 after the loss. Good luck, La Salle, and God speed.

A diminishing-returns principle exists to prevent teams from building up ratings by running up large victory margins against weak teams

Don’t Be a Square: 10 Tips for Betting on Football

Thanks to the juice, the only one who profits in this scenario is the bookmaker. “Because alcohol clouds your judgment and usually helps you to make rash decisions you usually wouldn’t otherwise make. The only touts bettors should consider are the ones who talk about the long haul and realistic winning percentages, which are in the upper 50 percent to lower 60 percent range.”

“In an average season, fewer than one bettor in twelve turns a profit,” Gordon says. “Over the course of several seasons, the percentage of bettors who turn a profit is minuscule.”

So, how much should you bet a game?

Another difference between squares and sharps is how they approach betting on game day.

6. So underdogs tend to be slightly undervalued – except by the sharps.”

“The biggest mistake that amateur bettors make is they increase their bets when they are losing,” Sevransky says. If North Texas is his best bet on a Saturday then that is his bet.

Certainly not back into the pockets of the average bettor. “In the NFL, a game will often be totally turned around by one or two plays, or even a single penalty. Big underdogs often find ways to cover the spread and they rarely give up toward the end of a game in front of the home crowd.”

8.

Even Hollywood is not immune – think Two for the Money with Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey.

Michael Konik, a sports writer and best-selling author of The Smart Money (Simon & Schuster 2006), explains why it is so hard for the recreational gambler to win at betting on football. “Teams play inspired ball at home.

“There is probably no better bet in sports than playing an underdog at home,” Moseman says. There is a wealth of information on the Internet; it is just up to you to find it and research it daily.”

And remember, in the immortal words of “Fast” Eddie Felson, “Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.”

“The bookies fear and despise a tiny coterie of professional bettors known as ‘the sharps,’” Konik says. “Thus, the bookies love and cherish the squares.”

10.

“The talking heads on TV know nothing about sports betting,” says Sevransky. Money Management – “This is without a doubt the most important aspect of betting on sports and possibly the most neglected,” says Morey “Doc” Moseman, a professional gambler and sports consultant with DocSports.com for nearly 40 years. Avoid Exotic Bets – “For very skilled handicappers, with a proven track record, there can, at least in theory, be value in betting parlays,” says Gordon on the type of bet that combines two or more individual wagers. Bet at the Right Time – “The sharp bettors tend to bet underdogs, and they tend to bet them early,” Moseman says. If you like an underdog, it is best to get your bet in as late as possible, where there is heavy action from squares on favorites. “In trying to bamboozle potential customers, many services make claims about having scouts all over the country that give them inside information and promise 70 or even 80 percent winners, as if the bookmakers were the biggest suckers in the world.

9. “As for me, the best bet in football is betting the point spread or over/under totals on individual games. The NFL, for example, will have very similar numbers at most of the betting shops you visit. In fact, sports bettors must pick 52.4 percent winners just to break even.”

Newspapers and popular sports sites routinely publish the lines or point spreads for games, and football insiders offer their picks to viewers each week on ESPN and other cable networks. To be a successful sports bettor you need to operate with a clear mind.”

“The standard bet requires gamblers to lay $11 for every $10 they want to win with the extra $1 or 10 percent known as the juice,” Konik says. “He is not jaded by teams and does not bet with his heart. And why not? We have unconditional love for the sport and betting $50 or $100 on a game adds an extra rush of adrenaline. If you want advice about sports betting, find someone who has a successful track record. If you are going to go with a favorite, it is best to place your bet early in the week when the sharps are laying heavy money on the points. But, when you’re struggling, that’s when you want to reduce your bet size until you get out of your slump. Giving 11 to 10 odds is almost always the cheapest price you can give.”

3. Avoid Chasing Bets – “Don’t do it! There is no worse way to mismanage your bankroll than to chase your bets after a losing day,” cautions Moseman on the dangerous practice of trying to immediately win back your losses. “Squares usually bet later in the week and they tend to pick the favorites. On college you will be able to find different lines at different sports books. “The key to proper money management is to be sure not to bet more than you can afford to lose.”

So, how much are we gambling each football season?

But that doesn’t mean you have to bet like a “square” and throw away your hard-earned money.

“A square is the average, unsophisticated gambler whose decision making is based on hunches, media manipulation, or spurious systems that cannot overcome the bookmaker’s inherent mathematical advantage,” Konik explains. Consider Underdogs – “In the long-run, it’s easier to win betting on the underdog,” Konik says. He loses year after year, according to Dan Gordon, a top football handicapper and author of How to Beat the Sports Books (Cardoza Publishing 2005).

“A square or recreational player might have a vague plan, but after two Corona’s he will definitely run to the window and make a hasty decision on the USC-Notre Dame game because he wants to be involved in the party atmosphere,” Vaccaro says.

Five Great Football Simulation Games

The results are based on actual NFL stats, so the results are accurate from a statistical standpoint.

Other Simulations

There are several other simulations available, including the following:

The video below demonstrates what gameplay looks like:

When it comes to modern football video games, nothing compares in popularity with the Madden series produced by EA Sports. The Madden games feature realistic graphics and fun gameplay, but some football enthusiasts prefer games that focus more on simulating actual NFL football games.

Solecismic Software first produced Front Office Football in the 1990s as one of the first simulations to focus on management aspects of football rather than actual gameplay itself. Later editions added the ability to call plays, but the game’s main focus has been on the front office aspects (hence, the name).

SportsSims: http://www.sportsims.net/

This game features both a professional version and a college version. Each year, the company sells million of copies each year. Older versions of the game tended to get hampered by flaws in the interface, but the newer versions of the game have improved these flaws and shortcomings.

This simulation has been around since the days of DOS, and gameplay is largely the same as it was 20 years ago. The database of players dates back to the 1950s, so players can also simulate historical seasons.

Please, Someone, Cast Him In A Science Fiction Movie

But he’s not as relevant anymore. A studio picture. I’ve worked in Washington now for almost 30 years.

Well, he’s not a sociopath — that’s a different universe. None of us did.

He does some terrible things.

Yeah, but we all do. What’s the fault? These are Shakespearean characters. It’s large compromises with ethics and morality the guy does, but it’s all within the realm we all do. I certainly have had very few times, but I’ve had times where an actor and I did not fit. But he made one horrible decision. That script came to me about two or three years before, and I read it and said, “This isn’t for me.” I didn’t get it. “The Hoax” is one of my favorite movies that I’ve made, and very few people have seen it. Unfortunately, the companies that make movies don’t make these anymore. This is like “Coriolanus” or something — “Richard II.” Big characters. They really are. You can contact him directly on Twitter.

“Arbitrage” played at Sundance and didn’t come out of the festival with the hype of something like “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” Can too much festival hype be a bad thing?

Well, you know, that was a festival movie. But you’ll never see it in the film. He made a big bet and he lost. He’s trying to make everything right while not going to jail, which seems reasonable. The guys who make big bets and win. He broke the law in a big way, but it’s understandable. It’s creepy. It’s the hubris of, “I can’t lose. and said, “Let’s make this movie.” It’s “Days of Heaven.” That, to me — it didn’t have anything to do with anyone else; it had to do with me. I remember Julia and I saw it together in a preview and we were sitting next to one another laughing and moved with everybody else. 7)

It went well, so thank you. You don’t get along. It was made with independent money; it didn’t have a distributor when we made it. And then I read it and thought, What was I thinking? This is perfect.

I was worried this movie was going down that Bernie Madoff-type road, but that’s not what this is at all. The scene in the park with my daughter, where I explain to her what happened — I certainly spin it in my favor. And I wanted to be genuinely creepy. He just lost the bet. A certain blockage comes up. And either it doesn’t fit the story or it’s written all wrong or something, and you get a sense that there’s something that’s not really happening. And who wouldn’t want to see the man who taught Julia Roberts how to be classy shoot lasers at an invading army of mutants?

And then the car accident that results in the death of his girlfriend happens. And if I do, I’m going to fix it because I’m a lord of the universe.”

Ahead, Gere explains why his character isn’t really like Bernie Madoff, remembers watching “Pretty Woman” with Julia Roberts and singles out the movie from his past that still means the most to him.

The topic came up during a discussion of “Star Wars,” which — hard as it may be to picture — Gere saw in theaters back in 1977. And that’s more like this character. This person doesn’t work.

Maybe that’s for the best.

I’ve never conceptualized a career.

So Michael Fassbender does a movie like “Shame” and that leads to something like “Prometheus.” I feel like you never went down the sci-fi or action-movie role. But you’d never see it in the film.

After the accident, Robert flees the scene. I was 15 and had to sneak in by buying a ticket to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” instead.

[Laughs] How did the date go?

Mike Ryan is senior entertainment writer for The Huffington Post. Not tricky creepy, but sick creepy. We all make bad decisions.

Am I a bad person because I’m rooting for him to succeed?

No.

So that was a surprise?

The degree that that has been embraced universally, the whole planet …

When you were coming up as an actor, what movies did you see? Did you see “Star Wars” with everyone else in 1977?

Sure.

‘Bachelorette’ (Sept. Terry Malick called me up in my hotel in L.A. I said, “Applesbee? “Applebee’s? What is it?”

That was my first date. Not the ones who Ponzi scheme and lie. So it’s just really well-made on all levels: It’s well-conceived, well-written, well-acted, well-shot, scored. Whether it would communicate to other people? I didn’t have a clue. The mix of people and story, and the way Garry Marshall was able to kind of corral it within his worldview, felt really good. Everybody does. It’s the guys who are winners. This is a movie with an independent distributor. It’s not a festival movie by design. The best people working in Washington came through his office. I’ve never — those few instances, it didn’t show up on film.

**SPOILER ALERT: Skip the next three questions and answers if you don’t want to know about a key plot point that happens early in the movie.**

Somebody, please cast Richard Gere in a science-fiction movie! Sure, it’s hardly the first genre that comes to mind when you think of the suave, intellectual star of “Pretty Woman” and “An Officer and a Gentleman,” but he says he’s game.

Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan and Isla Fisher star as the three worst bridesmaids this side of Kristen Wiig in “Bachelorette.” Based on the stage play by director and writer Leslye Headland, the hilarious film debuted on video on demand and iTunes in early August and earned nearly $500,000 during its first weekend.

That’s true. Horrible, horrible decision. I like the movie.

I liked it because when I first read the script it resonated with Bernie Madoff and Ted Kennedy … not a great movie.

. That’s why

‘Arbitrage’ should put Richard Gere back on the movie star map

Jarecki gives us a fascinating look into the mind of a financially and morally bankrupt individual.

Gere is superb at portraying the sliding scale of success. Miller is then caught in a series of escalating nightmares, from an affair gone wrong to the looming merger deadline to becoming the target in a police investigation.

Gere is wonderfully contrasted by the gutsy and grimy performance by Tim Roth as Detective Bryer. She expertly turns a seemingly non-existent role from the first half of the film into a heavy-hitting, blood-boiling performance by film’s end.

Jarecki fashions a wonderful Shakespearean character with Miller. No matter which road he takes, Miller is on his way to a very bad place. Susan Sarandon gives a noteworthy performance as Miller’s wife. He keeps up the façade of a sparkling billionaire, but behind those eyes we see raw fear and a conscience devouring itself.

“Arbitrage” is a resurrection of sorts for Gere. When things are going strong for Miller, Gere gives us a raucous, pompous performance of a man deifying himself. Gere really shines, though, as Miller comes close to losing everything. He is a perfect fit for Robert Miller, just as “Arbitrage” is a perfect fit for the star.

“Arbitrage” opens in theaters and is also available on-demand on September 14.

Richard Gere cooks the books in “Arbitrage,” an elegantly crafted potboiler that fires on all cylinders, giving the “Officer and a Gentlemen” star his juiciest role yet.

Gere delivers his best performance to date as Robert Miller, a hedge fund magnate secretly on the brink of bankruptcy. Bryer’s (Tim Roth) scrutiny while working the legal system to get his patsy (Nate Parker) off an accomplice charge. That’s both a testament to Gere’s performance as much as Jarecki’s screenplay.

. In a shady move to make his company look profitable and enticing to potential buyers, Miller borrows half a billion dollars from an associate (played by director William Friedkin) to temporarily store in his accounts. Miller’s scheme is mere inches from success when he accidentally kills his mistress (Laetitia Casta) in a car accident, bringing forth questions from the police and his wife (Susan Sarandon).  He works hard to avoid NYPD Det. With a sale pending, his associate demands his money back, against Miller’s protests. Though he is a pretty rotten person and quite conscious his actions are destroying everyone around him, it’s hard to not have a modicum of empathy for Miller. We witness him consciously make terrible choice after terrible choice, like a tragic hero.

Director Nicholas Jarecki’s first feature shows that he is a master juggler, keeping many equally intriguing threads of the story in the air without ever letting them fall. On top of all that, Miller must hide his fraudulent business dealings from his heir-apparent daughter Brooke (Brit Marling) and try to negotiate his buyer into purchasing his failed company. Gambling With Your Taxes: How to Report Your Wagers

But you don’t do this by subtracting them from the total amount of your winnings. website, www.irs.gov, or order them by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM.

No Wager, No Gamble

It’s important to note that sweepstakes winnings may or may not be considered “gambling income.” It depends upon whether contestants are required to purchase anything. For instance, if your total gambling winnings amount to $2000 and your losses add up to $2,500, the maximum amount you can list as a Miscellaneous Itemized Deduction is $2,000.

The Gambler

What if you’re a professional gambler? In this case, you can deduct your gambling losses as a business expense on Schedule C. You also respond to those contests aimed at generating magazine subscriptions where the chance of winning is one-in-a-gazillion. in favor of a taxpayer. It doesn’t matter if your prize is cash, a new car, or a vacation. But if your prize comes to more than a few bucks, there’s a good chance the organization sponsoring the activity is going to report it to the I.R.S.

Hope this helps!

Gail

This point was painfully driven home to Bill Remos last year. The benefit is there is no 2% threshold you have to exceed- every dollar is deductible. In case you have any doubts, re-read paragraph two above. In other words, did you put up something of value, i.e. (Can you already see where this case is headed?)

. you send in your entry but don’t sign up for any magazines.

The U.S. I know we’re supposed to report these winnings but I’m not sure if I need a special tax form or can put this on the 1040-EZ we usually file? Can I deduct my losses?

You can find out more about reporting gambling winnings/deductions from I.R.S. (With tangible prizes you have to report the cash value.)

Thus, she was not entitled to deduct her gambling losses as a business expense.

Provided you’ve kept good records, you can deduct your gambling losses.

No Dice

Last year the Tax Court ruled that although a taxpayer had the records to prove she played the slots on a regular basis, she didn’t do so on a full-time basis. is going to police the bingo game played in the church basement. Since you didn’t wager anything to participate in the sweepstakes it isn’t considered “gambling.” Remember: you can only deduct gambling losses to the extent you have gambling income.

To see how this might come into play, suppose you spend $10 per week on lotto tickets. This includes the proceeds from such things as betting on horses, slot machines, black jack, bingo, the lottery, etc. It also didn’t help that Remos’s name wasn’t on the printout, so there was no way for the court to know if it even applied to him!

Dear Gail-

Like a lot of retirees, my husband and I like to occasionally head to one of the riverboat casinos about an hour from our home. the amount of those losses on the basis of the record at hand.” He lost the case.

This week, Gail explains how you need to deal with those big gambling wins (you hope)!

Dear Audrey–

Gambling winnings are considered income and must be reported. Thanks to an audit, the I.R.S. Furthermore, let’s assume that when you enter these contests you don’t take the bait, i.e. The court is very clear that the burden of proof is on the taxpayer to demonstrate s/he sustained any losses.

In some cases, the sponsor of the contest will provide you with Form W-2G spelling out the exact value of your winnings and whether any federal tax was withheld. It’s not a lot, but when you’re living on Social Security an extra $50-100 is a big help. In court, he submitted a computer printout from the casino that listed such things as “money in” and “money out,” but he couldn’t explain how the numbers were generated. Don’t ask me why, but I usually come home with more money than I left with. You don’t need the casino or racetrack to sign off on the record you keep, you just need to document how much you bet and the payouts you received.

The Tax Court acknowledged that although Remos “most likely had some gambling losses during the year, we are unable to determine… However, you should be aware of the higher standard of proof required.

Realistically, it’s not likely the I.R.S. Supreme Court has ruled that for an activity to be elevated from the level of “hobby” to constitute a “trade or business” it must be “pursued full time, in good faith, and with regularity, to the production of income for a livelihood.”*

You Win

On the other hand, just this month the Tax Court ruled against the I.R.S. 23

Section 61 of the Internal Revenue code is pretty clear:

“gross income” must be reported and includes “all income from whatever source derived.”

If betting on the lottery is your thing, then hold on to your ticket stubs. The court said the fact that he spent about 250 days a year gambling and handicapping horse races demonstrated that he pursued this activity with “regularity.” Based on the documentation provided, the judges also found that the taxpayer conducted his gambling in a “businesslike” manner with the intent of generating a profit.

Unfortunately, if you have gambling income, the only income tax form you can use is the long, “Form 1040.” The total amount of your winnings for the year is entered on Line 21.

In a Technical Advice Memorandum (T.A.M.) issued in 2004, the I.R.S. She admitted that her primary source of income was her flower shop.

Thanks for your help,

Audrey

Offshore Gambling Operators to fall under Secondary UK Online Gambling Tax

The survey revealed that should the taxation be levied on such operators, gamblers and betters in UK would not shy away from playing at unlicensed sites, just to avoid the complications. There is a major discrepancy in the profits earned by the offshore and local ventures, thanks to the extremely lenient taxation rules that are levied on the offshore operators. However, since the time of its inception, this has come under scrutiny and has been widely criticised not just by local land-based casinos and betting establishments related to sports but also by several prominent politicians and public figures of the country. However, there are other ventures like Rank PLC that believe giving offshore ventures the advantage of not having to pay tax is against the EU legislation.

The relatively easier law that governs offshore gambling ventures was adopted by the UK online gambling legislation in the year 2005. Currently, the offshore operators who provide online gambling facilities in Britain have an upper hand on the British operators which has, understandably, disgruntled the local land and online operators. With this new law being passed, William Hill would be back to the mess it was in three years back. With a growing number of people voicing their opinions against this glaring differentiation, the government of UK has been forced to rethink its policies. Speaking about the issue, Ralph Topping, CEO, William Hill, said, “Money will always find a way out. Views of many of experts from the industry as well as several gambling ventures representatives will be considered by the committee before a conclusion is arrived at. With so much talk surrounding the UK government’s impending secondary taxation and licensing implementation, legendary William Hill decided to go ahead with its independent survey. This survey conducted by William Hill also brought to light the fact that if the tax is 10%, ventures would lose 27% of their revenue while if the tax is 15%, ventures would lose as much as 40% of their revenue. I hope the Government sees sense on this.” For the very purpose of evading high taxes in the UK, William Hill had moved its operations headquarter from the country to Gibraltar. More people will go overseas or to fly-by-night, unregulated sites where the consumer is not protected. Going by the report, tough times are predicted for offshore online gambling operators as the government plans to impose taxation laws that promise to be more stringent than they have been in the past. The results have been worth a glance.

In the recent turn of events, UK officials have decided to investigate the online gambling taxation scenario in the country and have declared that a commissioning body has already been formed for the same. As a result of this, the government has decided to apply a secondary tax on all such offshore gambling ventures.

The commission that has been formed by the UK officials has been established with the purpose of analysing the relevance, bearing and outcome, should a secondary taxation be implemented on the offshore operators. If the stricter laws are sanctioned, such disparity will soon be a thing of the past.. Owing to such rules, offshore ventures have managed to cash in much more than their UK-based operators have been able to do
